All-Inclusive Transport Policy – How This Northern Nigeria State Is Doing Mass Transit Differently

In an attempt to reverse the trend of exerting pressure on road infrastructure assets, the Kaduna State government will introduce three projects including the Bus Mass Transit (BMT), Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and Rail Mass Transit to enhance transportation options in the state.

The commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, Engineer Usman Mahmud Hassan, disclosed this,  yesterday, at the national workshop on public consultation to review the green paper on Kaduna State Transport Policy.

He said negotiations were ongoing with a consortium of firms and investors to kick-start the projects as soon as practicable.

Road transportation, being the only means open to the people, he said, had exerted pressure on road infrastructure assets and vehicles plying them. This, he said, had taken huge tolls on lives and property nationwide.

“Governor Nasir el-Rufa’i, mindful of the current economic setback, is committed to making good his promise of bequeathing to Kaduna State indigenes and citizens yet unborn, transport policy that will be all-inclusive and world-standard and, above all, policy that residents will call ‘our own,’ having made substantial input to its formulation,” he said.
