Elections 2009 comes to an end : President Seretse Khama Ian KHAMA 

Gaborone — Chief Justice Nganunu, the Chief Justice of Botswana, serving as the presiding officer for year 2009 Botswana elections has declared the nominee of Botswana Democracy Party (BDP) Lt. General Seretse Khama Ian KHAMA as the President of the republic of Botswana until 2014. The Chief made this announcement on Botswana National Television at 22:40 Central Africa time, today 17th October 2009.

According the constitution of Botswana, the nominated presidential candidate must obtain the vote of at least 29 MPs out of the total of 57 MPs to become the president.

The Chief Justice said “In my capacity as returning Officer, I therefore have the honour of announcing to the nation of Botswana and the world as large that the winner of the presidential contest. That candidate Lt General Seretse Khama Ian KHAMA as president…I congratulate him for the confidence the voters have placed on him. Good evening, thank you.”
