Ethiopia launches new Omo River hydroelectric plant. (BBC)

In a bid to harness hydroelectric power from the Omo River to put an end to Ethiopia’s power problems, a new hydroelectric plant has been inaugurated. The project which is a controversial one, critics fear the project will pose problems for the environment and those living along the river. Ethiopia is working towards being one of the top producers of energy and export to the region. Countries like Kenya, Djibouti and Sudan are possible buyers of Ethiopia’s energy.

The production of electricity may surpass coffee as the country’s leading export in the coming decade. There are a few more plans which will be added to guarantee the country never lacks electricity. This means more manufacturing plants will spring up and economic growth will be positive.
