Hutus ‘killed Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana’. (BBC)
A government enquiry has revealed that, Hutu extremists’ were responsible for the assassination of former Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana in 1994 and capitalized on it to massacre Tutsi rivals. Former reports however communicated that, Tutsis were responsible for the murder of the Hutu president.
The report took two years to complete and testimonies were heard from over six hundred witnesses, the report is said to be the most exhaustive inquiry into the 1994 assassination. The son the late President dismissed the findings of the report describing it as a mere game being played by the leaders. The reports said Mr. Habyarimana’s own cronies planned the attack months before executing it. The Hutus knowingly carried out the attack to avert a peace deal with the Tutsi-led Rwandan Patriotic Front rebels and also an excuse to wipe out the country’s Tutsi population.
The report is in contradiction to the one released by the French government which sparked diplomatic tension between the two countries.
