Algeria Energy boss ‘faces corruption probe’. (BBC)

The chief executive officer of Algeria’s state owned energy company Mohammed Meziane is under investigation for alleged corruption practices. Sonatrach is the leading supplier of gas to Europe in Algeria and accounts for one third of the country’s GDP.

The allegations include the company’s tenders for consultancy and security contracts. The vice president of the company has been appointed stand-in chief executive to replace Mr. Meziane who is on suspension pending investigations. The investigation is not expected to pose any delays to the exportation of gas or business whatsoever, even though the company’s reputation might be tainted.
