The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) says US$12.6 million has been committed to the government of Liberia through the Ministry of Health & Social Welfare for HIV/AIDS, Wash and Nutrition.
The disclosure was made by outgoing UNICEF Country Representative Ms. Isabel Crowley during a signing ceremony between UNICEF and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
Ms. Crowley said the fund is part of an estimated US$30 million package given to UNICEF through contributions from donors. She said it is intended to be used for a one-year UNICEF-Liberia child survival work plan.
She added that UNICEF has made interventions in other areas such as education, health care delivery and capacity development, among others.
Ms. Crowley noted that infant mortality rate has dropped to 68 percent while maternal mortality remains a challenge that needs to be worked on.
For his part, Health Minister Walter Gwenigale expressed gratitude to UNICEF, and assured that the money would be used for the intended purpose.
Minister Gwenigale said government has a 10-year work plan of essential health packages that has been supported by different donors.
