Egypt Officially Announces Sisi as President

Former army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has won a sweeping victory in Egypt’s presidential election, the Presidential Elections Commission (PEC) announced the final outcome in a press conference on Tuesday.
Final results show that Sisi won 96.91 percent of votes cast, while 3.09 voted for leftist politician Hamdeen.
Sisi, 59, ousted Egypt’s first freely elected president, the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Mursi, in July last year following mass protests against his rule.
The former army chief resigned from the military in March in order to run for president.
He was appointed Defence Minister by Mursi in 2012.
Security forces closed Cairo’s Tahrir Square for celebrations earlier on Tuesday ahead of the announcement of official results of the presidential election
Celebrations are also expected to take place in different locations, including by the presidential palace in Heliopolis.
