ASUU strike and students’ right to education

For the past eight months, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the union that represents universities’ academic staff has been on strike, grounding all academic activities in the universities. Despite a series of unproductive meetings between the federal government and ASUU, the strike does not appear to be ending soon with the union’s insistence that all their demands must be met.

The union says the strike is as a result of the disagreement between them and the federal government over the implementation of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) which ASUU said encroaches on the autonomy of the universities. And that the government also failed to implement the 2019 Memorandum of Action (MOA) signed with the federal government in 2019…..
